Thunderbird Tips
Thunderbird is highly customisable. You can adjust various settings to suit your preferences, within the Settings area. Access this area via the icon in the bottom-left, or the icon in the top-right.
Here are a few useful settings available on the General tab of the Settings area.
- Choose which webpage is displayed when you first open Thunderbird. This defaults to a page about the Mozilla Thunderbird project, requesting donations towards further development. You can change it to a page that is more useful to you, or switch it off entirely.
- Supported languages and the language to use as the default, e.g. British vs US English spelling.
- A checkbox to Allow Windows Search to search messages.
Here are a few useful settings available on the Appearance tab of the Settings area.
- Choose between a card or table view for your list of emails, and whether cards are two or three lines tall. Often two is enough, allowing more emails to be visible on screen.
- Choose whether email conversations are threaded (grouped together), unthreaded, or grouped by your chosen sort order.
Thunderbird is privacy-focused, especially compared to common alternatives, however Mozilla do collect anonymous telemetry data to help improve the software. If preferred, this can be disabled in the Settings > Privacy & Security area.
Additional themes, including dark modes, can be installed via Settings > Add-ons & Themes.
